XCMG at a glance
XCMG stands for Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group and is based in Xuzhou in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. Its roots date back to 1943, to the Huaxing Ironworks; the first tower crane was built there in 1957, followed by China’s first 5-tonne mobile crane in 1963. XCMG was established as a group in March 1989 and remains state-owned to this day. In 1992, XCMG became the first Chinese company to exhibit at bauma in Munich; its subsidiary, XCMG Construction Machinery, has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange since 1996. In 2025, it generated a turnover of around 100.8 billion yuan. In the 2026 ‘Yellow Table’ published by the industry publisher KHL – the ranking of the world’s largest construction machinery manufacturers – XCMG is once again among the top three globally.
XCMG has close ties with Germany. In 2011, the group acquired the German hydraulics specialist Fluitronics and the Dutch supplier AMCA, followed in July 2012 by a 52 per cent stake in the concrete pump manufacturer Schwing, based in Herne. Since 2012, XCMG has been operating a European research centre in Krefeld. Today, the site is also home to XCMG Europe GmbH, a European procurement centre, and the sales and service company XCMG European Sales & Services. The latter supplies excavators, aerial work platforms, mobile cranes, wheel loaders and road construction machinery across Europe. XCMG is also known for its record-breaking cranes: in 2013, it produced a 4,000-tonne crawler crane, and in 2024, the XCA4000 was delivered – according to the manufacturer, the world’s largest mobile crane with eleven axles.

What the XCMG model designation reveals
XCMG’s excavators bear the abbreviation XE. The number following it roughly indicates the weight class: an XE215C weighs around 21.5 t, an XE60GA around 6 t, and an XE27E just under 2.8 t. This isn’t always entirely accurate; the XE35U, for example, weighs in at around 4.2 t – more than the number would suggest. The letters at the end (E, U, CA, DA, GA or G PRO) denote series, generations and variants, such as different engine and emissions standards. XCMG does not publish a standardised explanation of these abbreviations. The type plate, year of manufacture and technical data sheet are therefore the authoritative sources; the operating weight is stated in our advert. For wheel loaders, the figure usually indicates the rated load class: an LW300 belongs to the 3-t class, whilst the ZL50 and LW500 belong to the 5-t class.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| XE15U / XE17U / XE18E | approx. 1.8 t | Gardening and landscaping, domestic connections, transport on a trailer |
| XE19E / XE20E | 1.9–2.0 t | Trenches, foundations, courtyards |
| XE27E / XE27U | 2.7–2.8 t, approx. 15 kW | Pipe and sewer construction, driveways |
| XE35U / XE35E | approx. 4.2 t, approx. 18 kW | All-rounder in civil engineering |
| XE55E / XE55DA | 5.7–5.75 t | Excavation pits, sewer construction |
| XE60CA / XE60GA | 5.96–6.05 t | XCMG’s best-selling excavator: earthworks, heavy attachments |
| XE135 | around 13 t | Compact excavator for road and pipeline construction |
| XE215C | 21.5 t, 128.5 kW (Isuzu), 1.0 m³ bucket | Earthworks, demolition, extraction |

What we look for in a used XCMG
European specification and documentation: Many XCMG excavators are traded worldwide. For use in the EU, the following are required: CE marking, a declaration of conformity and an engine that meets the relevant emissions standard (currently Stage V in the EU). Make sure it is the European version and ask to see the documentation and type plate.
Undercarriage and tracks: Rubber tracks, track rollers, idler wheels and track shoes are the most expensive wear parts on mini excavators. Check the condition and tension of the tracks, and look out for worn-out rollers.
Engine and hydraulics: Depending on the model, XCMG fits engines from suppliers such as Isuzu or Cummins. The engine make is stated in the technical data sheet and is a key factor in the availability of spare parts. Check for cold starting, smoke emissions and leaks, as well as smooth hydraulic movements under load.
Service and spare parts: Ask for maintenance records and details of a contact point for parts. Quick-change couplers, auxiliary hydraulics and bucket packages significantly increase the value of a second-hand XE excavator.
