Yale at a glance
The brand traces its origins back to the lock manufacturer Yale & Towne, whose predecessor was founded in 1868 in Stamford (Connecticut); the engineer Henry R. Towne was involved. In 1875, the company entered the material handling sector with patents for hand-operated chain hoists; this was followed in 1920 by a battery-powered low-lift platform truck, and from 1950 onwards, forklift trucks with petrol, gas and diesel engines were added to the range. In 1963, Yale & Towne merged with Eaton; in 1985, NACCO Industries took control of the forklift truck business and merged it with competitor Hyster in 1989. Since 2012, both brands have been part of Hyster-Yale, an independent company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and headquartered in Cleveland (Ohio). The lock business went its separate way and is now part of other groups.
In 2025, Hyster-Yale generated a turnover of around 3.8 billion US dollars and employs more than 7,500 people worldwide. In Europe, the group has manufacturing sites in Craigavon (Northern Ireland), Nijmegen (the Netherlands) and Masate (Italy), amongst others. Since 2023, the brand has been operating under the name ‘Yale Lift Truck Technologies’; in addition to forklift trucks and warehouse technology, its current product range also includes robotics solutions, the Yale Reliant driver assistance system and Yale Vision telematics.

What the Yale model designation reveals
Yale forklifts are identified by a letter code + load capacity + model series. The first letter indicates the drive type: E stands for electric, G for internal combustion engine. For internal combustion engines, this is followed by the fuel type – D for diesel, L for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – whilst for electric forklifts, R denotes a model with a driver’s seat. The final letter describes the tyres: P for pneumatic or super-elastic tyres, C for the compact version with solid rubber tyres. In Europe, the number indicates the load capacity in 100 kg, whilst the suffix denotes the series (such as VX, VT, VF, VL or MX). A GDP35VX is therefore a 3.5 t diesel forklift from the VX series, whilst an ERP16VT is a 1.6 t electric forklift from the three-wheeled VT series. Warehouse equipment has its own abbreviations: MP for pallet trucks, MS for high-lift pallet trucks, MR for reach trucks, MO for order pickers.
| Type | Load capacity | Drive / Design | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERP16VT / ERP20VT | 1.6–2.0 t | Electric, 3-wheel | Yale’s best-selling forklifts: warehouses, loading bays, narrow aisles |
| ERP20VF / ERP25VL | 2.0–2.5 t | Electric, 4-wheel | Production, multi-shift, indoor and outdoor |
| GLP20VX / GLP25VX / GLP30VX | 2.0–3.0 t | Propellant | Ventilated halls, mixed indoor and outdoor operation |
| GDP30VX / GDP35VX | 3.0–3.5 t | Diesel | Yard, building materials trade, timber |
| GDP40VX / GDP50VX | 4.0–5.0 t | Diesel | Steel, concrete, heavy pallets |
| GDP60 / GDP70 | 6.0–7.0 t | Diesel | Heavy-duty outdoor use |
| MR14 / MR20 | 1.4–2.0 t | Reach truck | High-bay, narrow aisles |
| MP20 / MS16 | 1.6–2.0 t | Pallet trucks and high-lift trucks | Truck unloading, storage up to medium height |
What we look for in a second-hand Yale
Engine and transmission on internal combustion models: check cold start, exhaust fumes, oil leaks and how the transmission shifts when changing direction. Compare operating hours with the service log; for LPG forklifts, inspect the gas system and inspection certificates.
Battery and charger for electric forklifts: For ERP models, the age and capacity of the battery determine the running costs. The charger with the correct voltage should be supplied; for lithium-ion models, the charging technology should also be included.
Mast, forks, chains: Check for play in the mast sections, chain elongation, fork wear, side shifters and auxiliary hydraulics. Lift height, free lift and mast design are specified in the advert.
Model series and documentation: Check that the model series (VX, VT, VF …) and year of manufacture on the type plate match those in the advert – these determine spare parts and equipment. For Germany, ensure proof of the annual inspection in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68 is provided.

Frequently asked questions about Yale forklifts
What do GDP, GLP and ERP stand for at Yale?
G stands for internal combustion engine, E for electric. For internal combustion engines, D stands for diesel or L for LPG; for electric forklifts, R stands for a vehicle with a driver’s seat. P stands for pneumatic or super-elastic tyres, C for the compact version with solid rubber tyres. The number indicates the load capacity in 100 kg – a GDP35VX has a load capacity of 3.5 t.
Are Yale and Hyster the same company?
The two brands have been part of the same group since 1989 and now form the Hyster-Yale Group, based in Cleveland. They share development and manufacturing facilities, but operate with their own product ranges and dealer networks.
Does Yale forklift trucks have anything to do with Yale locks?
Both trace their origins back to the same company, Yale & Towne, which was founded in the 19th century. Today, the forklift and lock businesses are completely separate companies; the forklifts belong to Hyster-Yale.
Which Yale forklifts are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the ERP16 and ERP20 electric forklifts lead the way, particularly those from the three-wheeled VT series, followed by the GLP25 and GLP30 LPG forklifts and the GDP30 and GDP35 diesel forklifts.
What is the difference between the ERP-VT and the ERP-VF?
The VT series is a three-wheeled, front-wheel-drive electric forklift that can turn on the spot and is suitable for narrow aisles. The VF series is the four-wheeled version in the same load capacity class of 1.6 to 2.0 tonnes. Which is more suitable depends on aisle width, floor conditions and driving routes.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Yale forklift?
Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, 8,000 to 12,000 hours is no problem for internal combustion engines. For electric forklifts, the condition of the battery is the key factor; a new or reconditioned battery significantly enhances the value of a machine with high operating hours.
Does Yale also manufacture warehouse equipment?
Yes. In addition to counterbalanced forklifts, there are electric pallet trucks (MP), high-lift trucks (MS), reach trucks (MR), order pickers (MO), narrow-aisle forklifts (MTC) and tow tractors.
Can I lease a Yale forklift or finance it through hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
