Caterpillar at a glance
Caterpillar Tractor Co. was formed in April and May 1925 in California following the merger of Benjamin Holt’s Holt Manufacturing Company with the C. L. Best Tractor Company. Holt had already tested the first practical crawler tractor on 24 November 1904 and was granted a patent for the continuous-track undercarriage in 1907; the name is attributed to a company photographer who thought the track running over the idler rollers resembled a caterpillar. The group’s headquarters were long based in Peoria (Illinois), moved to Deerfield from 2017 to 2022, and have since been in Irving, Texas. In 2025, Caterpillar Inc. generated a turnover of US$67.6 billion with a workforce of around 118,000. The group includes, amongst others, Solar Turbines (since 1981), the engine manufacturer Perkins (since 1998) and the mining specialist Bucyrus (since 2011).
The machinery is sold and serviced worldwide through around 220 independent dealers in almost 200 countries. In Germany, this role has been fulfilled since 1954 by Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH – which, according to its own statement, is one of the oldest and largest Cat partners on the European continent, with 35 locations nationwide for new and used machinery, spare parts and service. For buyers of used CAT machines, this means that parts and workshop services are available nationwide.

What the Caterpillar model designation reveals
For Caterpillar (CAT) construction machinery, the number indicates the series, and within a particular group of machines, the general rule is: the higher the number, the larger the machine. For mini-excavators (series 301 to 310), the number after the ‘30’ usually corresponds roughly to the operating weight – a 302.7 CR weighs around 2.7 t, a 308 CR around 8.2 t. Many current mini-excavators bear the CR designation; according to the distributor, models such as the 301.6, 301.8 and 302 CR are specifically designed for confined spaces. For crawler excavators, the number also indicates the weight class: a 313 weighs around 13.8 t, a 323 around 22–25 t, and a 336 around 36–39 t. The situation is similar for wheel loaders (906 to 995) and mobile excavators (M denoting the wheeled version). On older machines, the suffix usually indicates the model variant: On the second-hand market, for example, the 966 can be found as 966C to 966M, and the 320 as 320B, C, D, E and F. Current models often bear only the number or suffixes such as GC or XE. Cat has changed the names of its road rollers: the current CS12 was previously known as the CS56B, whilst the CS14 was formerly the CS68B.
| Model | Operating weight (current model) | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 320 (320D, 320E, 320GC) | roughly 20-tonne class | Most commonly traded CAT excavator: earthworks, sewer construction, demolition |
| 330 / 336 | 29.3–39.3 t | Mass excavation, quarrying, heavy attachments |
| 966 | 23.3 t | Gravel and sand quarries, recycling, material handling |
| 950 / 950GC | 19.1 t (950GC) | Building materials trade, gravel plant, winter maintenance |
| 980 | 30.4 t | Quarrying, lorry loading in multi-shift operation |
| 938 | 16.4 t | Maintenance depot, agriculture, earthworks |
| 908 | 6.6 t | Gardening and landscaping, farm, local authority |
| 305 CR | 5.1 t | Pipe laying, domestic connections, landscaping |
| 308 CR | 8.2 t | Sewer works in roadways, excavation pits |
| M318 | 18.0–19.7 t | Urban roadworks and civil engineering, material handling |
What we look for in a used Caterpillar
Generation and emission standard: The same model has been manufactured across many generations over the decades – a 966C and a 966M have little in common technically. Check that the letters, year of manufacture and serial number on the type plate match those in the advert; the engine’s emission standard is crucial for use in low-emission zones and for public sector contracts.
Wheel loaders: Drivetrain and lifting frame: check the gearbox, axles and brakes under load; inspect the play in the lifting frame, quick-change coupler and articulated joint. Tyre condition and size account for a significant proportion of the value of large loaders such as the 966 or 980.
Excavators: Undercarriage, pins, slewing ring: track links, idler rollers, guide wheel and track rollers are the most expensive wear parts. Check for play in the bucket, stick and boom pins as well as on the slewing ring; inspect the hydraulics for leaks and ensure smooth movement under load.
Maintenance and documentation: Many CAT machines have been serviced by Zeppelin or other CAT dealers; a complete service history book and oil analyses are a plus. Check that the operating hours match the maintenance records; ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity and UVV inspection certificate.
Caterpillar with us: Dealers and stock
OCCAMAT accounts for the majority of our Caterpillar stock, followed by Kraus Baumaschinen from Frankenthal and GSK Baumaschinen from Hanhofen. The focus is on used wheel loaders, supplemented by mini-excavators, dumpers and a few other machines. You can find comparable machines under Komatsu, Liebherr and Volvo, and our full stock in the construction machinery category.
Frequently asked questions about Caterpillar construction machinery
Are Caterpillar and CAT the same brand?
Yes. CAT is the abbreviation and trademark of Caterpillar Inc. The machines are marketed as ‘Cat’, whilst the company is called Caterpillar Inc. and is now based in Irving, Texas.
Who sells and supports Caterpillar machinery in Germany?
Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH has been the Cat dealer in Germany since 1954, with 35 branches specialising in new machinery, spare parts and servicing.
Which Caterpillar machines are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand portals, the 320 crawler excavator leads the way, followed by the 330 and 336, as well as the 966 and 950 wheel loaders. Among the smaller machines, the 305 mini-excavator, the 908 wheel loader and the 308 mini-excavator are among the most common models.
What do the numbers on CAT excavators mean?
They roughly indicate the weight class: a 313 weighs around 14 t, a 336 around 36–39 t. For mini-excavators, the number following the 30 usually corresponds roughly to the weight in tonnes, for example the 302.7 CR at around 2.7 tonnes. The exact operating weight is specified in the advert.
What do the letters, such as 966G or 320D, mean?
On older machines, the letter usually indicates the generation. On the second-hand market, the 966 is available as models ranging from 966C to 966M, and the 320 as models ranging from 320B to 320F. When ordering spare parts, therefore, the model, letter and serial number are important.
What sizes of wheel loaders does Caterpillar manufacture?
The range extends from compact wheel loaders 906 to 908 with an operating weight of around 6 t, via the 910 to 938 and the medium-sized loaders 950GC to 980, up to large machines such as the 988 XE, 992 and 995 with an operating weight of up to 240 t.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a used CAT wheel loader?
Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, high operating hours are common for large wheel loaders; the key factors are the condition of the transmission, axles, lift mast and tyres, as well as the maintenance history.
Can I lease a Caterpillar machine or finance it through hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
