MAN Truck & Bus at a glance
MAN Truck & Bus SE, based in Munich, is part of the TRATON GROUP, Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle division. Its roots go back to the St. Antony Ironworks (1758) and the Sander Machine Factory in Augsburg (1840); in 1908 the name Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, or M.A.N. for short, was adopted. From 1915, MAN began manufacturing commercial vehicles, and in 1924 the company, according to its own account, unveiled the world’s first vehicle diesel engine with direct injection. In 1971, Büssing in Salzgitter was acquired.
In the 2025 financial year, MAN achieved a turnover of 14.1 billion euros and sold around 101,600 vehicles, of which just over 63,000 were lorries and 31,000 were TGE vans. Heavy-duty TGS and TGX lorries are manufactured in Munich; lorries of all classes in Kraków/Niepołomice (Poland); engines and, since 2025, batteries in Nuremberg; and components in Salzgitter. Since June 2025, the eTGX and eTGS electric lorries have been in series production in Munich, with a range of up to around 500 kilometres; the Steyr plant was sold in 2021.

What the MAN model designation reveals
MAN lorries feature a two-part number following the model series: the first part indicates the weight class in tonnes, the second the engine power in PS. A TGX 18.440 is therefore an 18-tonne tractor unit with around 440 PS, a TGS 26.440 is a three-axle truck in the 26-tonne class with 440 PS, and a TGS 41.480 is a four-axle truck in the 41-tonne class. This is followed by the axle configuration: 4x2 = two axles, one driven; 6x4 = three axles, two driven; 8x4 = four axles, two driven; further letters describe the chassis and bodywork. Since 2020, the new generation of TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL lorries has been available with the D15, D26 and D38 engines and the TipMatic automated gearbox; the new D30 was added in 2025.
| Type | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| TGX 18.440 4x2 | 18-tonne class, approx. 440 PS | Long-haul transport, articulated lorry |
| TGS 18.480 4x2 | 18-tonne class, 480 PS | Articulated lorry for construction and regional transport |
| TGS 26.400 / 26.440 6x4 | 26-tonne class, 400–440 PS | Three-way tipper, crane, roll-off |

| TGL 12.220 | 12-tonne class, 220 PS | Urban delivery van, trades |

What we look for in a used MAN lorry
Documents and inspections: Registration certificate Parts I and II, annual general inspection (for lorries over 3.5 t), safety inspection (half-yearly for vehicles over 7.5 t) and tachograph inspection (every two years) – ideally the records covering several years, not just the current sticker.
Engine and exhaust after-treatment: cold start, blow-by, oil consumption; for Euro 6 vehicles, the AdBlue system, particulate filter and fault memory. Check that the mileage and engine hours match the maintenance records.
Gearbox, retarder, axles: TipMatic should shift smoothly without hesitation; the intarder or retarder should be functioning; rear axles and differential locks on four-wheel-drive and construction vehicles should operate without noise.
Bodywork: For tippers, check the tipping cylinder, tipper body, side panels and hydraulics in accordance with the UVV inspection; for crane lorries, carry out the crane inspection; for roll-off lorries, check the hooks and locking mechanism. Inspect the chassis for cracks and rust.

What does TGS 26.440 6x4 mean?
TGS is the model series for construction and distribution transport, 26 is the weight class in tonnes, 440 is the engine power in PS and 6x4 is the axle configuration: three axles, two of which are driven – the typical configuration for a three-way tipper.
What is the difference between the MAN TGS and the TGX?
The TGX is built for long-haul transport, with larger cabs and more powerful engines, usually as a tractor unit. The TGS is the versatile heavy-duty truck for construction and distribution – available as a tipper, crane, roll-off truck or tractor unit.
Which MAN lorries are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
By far the TGS and TGX, followed by the TGL and TGM. Of the older model ranges, the TGA is still widely represented; the F2000, M2000 and L2000 are now mainly found as crane and tipper vehicles.
When was the new generation of MAN lorries launched?
The new generation of TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL was unveiled in February 2020, featuring redesigned cabs, the D15, D26 and D38 engines, and the TipMatic gearbox. Used vehicles from the previous generation are correspondingly cheaper.
Are there electric MAN lorries?
Yes. Since June 2025, MAN has been mass-producing the eTGX and eTGS electric lorries in Munich, with a range of up to around 500 kilometres. So far, they are rarely found on the second-hand market.
What inspections does a used lorry require?
Lorries over 3.5 t must undergo an annual general inspection; vehicles over 7.5 t must also undergo a safety inspection every six months; the tachograph is inspected every two years. Tipper and crane bodies require their own UVV inspections. Make sure you are given the inspection reports.
Where are MAN lorries built?
The heavy-duty TGS and TGX series are built in Munich, whilst lorries of all classes are built in Kraków/Niepołomice in Poland; engines come from Nuremberg and components from Salzgitter.
Can I lease a MAN lorry or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
