What to look out for in second-hand soil cultivation equipment
Wear parts: coulter tips, guide plates and wing coulters on cultivators; disc diameter on disc harrows (a 510 mm disc measuring less than 450 mm needs replacing); tines on rotary harrows. We document the condition with photos, as a set of wear parts can easily cost between €2,000 and €5,000.
Bearings and gearboxes: Disc bearings and rotary harrow gearboxes often run dry. We check for play in the discs, oil leaks on the rotary harrow beam and unusual noises during the PTO test. Maschio rotary harrows have oil-bath sump tanks, the oil level of which is easy to check.
Frame and folding mechanism: Cracks in welds, bent tine carriers following contact with stones, and leak-free folding cylinders. Overload protection (shear bolts, springs or hydraulic stone protection) must be in good working order.
Trailing rollers and rollers: Bearings on packer, tubular and wedge ring rollers; scrapers and working depth adjustment; for Cambridge rollers, check individual rings for breakage.
Transport and lighting: For machines over 3 m wide, lighting, warning signs and, in the case of semi-mounted machines, a functioning braking system are required for road travel.

Frequently asked questions about used soil tillage equipment
Cultivator or short-disc harrow for stubble cultivation?
The short-disc harrow works shallowly at 5–12 cm and is highly effective at high speeds, for example for the first stubble cultivation. The cultivator loosens the soil to a depth of up to 30 cm and incorporates straw more thoroughly. Many farms use both implements in succession.
How much power does a 6-metre cultivator require?
As a rule of thumb, we estimate 40–50 PS per metre of working width for deep loosening. A Lemken Karat 10/600 KUA therefore requires approx. 250–300 PS; less is needed for shallow work. Short-disc harrows manage with 25–35 PS per metre.
How much do second-hand tillage implements cost?
Mulchers and small implements start at around €700, whilst compact disc harrows such as the Väderstad Carrier cost around €31,000–33,000. Cultivators from Lemken and Köckerling, with working widths of 4–6 m, cost around €46,000–73,000.
When is a blade roller worthwhile?
Blade rollers such as the Saphir SinusCut or Kerner X-Cut shred catch crops and maize stubble without a PTO drive at 10–15 km/h. They reduce the amount of mulching required and help control corn borers, but they are no substitute for soil loosening.
What should I look out for when buying a second-hand rotary harrow?
The condition of the tines, the oil level and whether the rotor housing is leak-free, play in the rotor bearings, and the condition of the trailing roller. Rotary harrows last a very long time if well maintained; a set of new tines for a 3-metre model costs approx. €500–900.
