Which plough is right for your farm?
Mounted reversible ploughs, 4–5 coulters (120–200 PS): Kverneland 2300 S and 3300 S Variomat (5-furrow, approx. €37,000), Rabe S-Albatros 140 5-F, Rabe Star 120, Maschio Unico M Passo 4+1, Kverneland EG 100. The standard choice for mixed and forage farms; with Variomat or Vari-Hydro, the cutting width can be adjusted hydraulically from the cab.
Heavy-duty mounted reversible ploughs, 6–7 coulters (200–300 PS): Kverneland PB 100 Variomat with 6 to 7 shares, Rabe S-Albatros 140 6-F (approx. €25,000–40,000 for the Albatros range). For arable farms with 250 PS class tractors where a semi-mounted plough is not yet necessary. The lifting capacity of the lift mechanism and the front axle relief must be suitable.
Semi-mounted reversible ploughs with 6+1 to 8 coulters (from 250 PS): Lemken Diamant 16 VU 6+1 (approx. €58,000–60,000), Lemken Euro Titan 10 X, Kverneland PW 100 with 8 shares (approx. €98,000), Gregoire-Besson Voyager S70 with 7 and 8 shares, Överum DVL 71080 and DL 8108. The undercarriage supports part of the weight – this allows large numbers of shares to be used even with standard tractors and crawler tractors.

What we look for in second-hand ploughs
Wear parts: Measure the ploughshares, skimmer tips, attachments and soles. Knock-on coulters or quick-change systems are common on Kverneland and Rabe ploughs; a set of coulters and tips for a 5-furrow plough costs a low four-figure sum. Worn skimmers are more expensive than coulters.
Frame and swivel mechanism: Check the frame tubing for cracks and distortion, particularly at the coulter mountings. Check for play in the swivel mechanism and the tower; ensure the swivel cylinders are leak-free and that the plough turns cleanly without rebounding.
Overload protection: shear bolts, spring-loaded safety mechanism or hydraulic non-stop safety device. For hydraulic protection, check the pressure accumulator and pre-load pressure; all units must trigger and return evenly.
Cutting width and support wheel: Run through the Variomat or Vari-Hydro adjustment once; check joints for play. A combination wheel (support and transport wheel) with intact bearings and damping is important for road travel.
Semi-mounted ploughs: Check the chassis, steering knuckles and tyres, as well as the rear axle hydraulics and lighting. For road travel, clarify axle loads, transport width and, where applicable, type approval.

How much does a used reversible plough cost?
Older 3- and 4-share ploughs are available from around €1,250. Well-maintained 5-share mounted ploughs with Variomat cost around €25,000–40,000, semi-mounted ploughs with 6+1 shares at around €60,000 and large 8-share ploughs at just under €100,000.
How many PS does a plough need?
As a rule of thumb, we allow for 35–50 PS per coulter, depending on the soil, working depth and cutting width. A 5-furrow mounted plough requires 160–220 PS, whilst an 8-furrow semi-mounted plough needs 300 PS or more.
Mounted or semi-mounted plough?
Up to 6 shares, the mounted plough is more compact, more manoeuvrable and cheaper. From 7 shares onwards, the weight and lever arm overload most lifting mechanisms – the semi-mounted plough rests on its own chassis and remains easier to control on the road.
What are the benefits of hydraulic cutting width adjustment?
It allows you to adjust the cutting width per body whilst driving to suit the ground conditions and traction, typically 30–50 cm. This saves diesel, makes ploughing at field edges and in narrow strips easier, and improves the furrow when ploughing on varying soil types.
When is it worth fitting a packer behind the plough?
On light and medium soils, when sowing takes place immediately after ploughing. The packer reconsolidates the soil, breaks up clods and reduces evaporation. A plough with a packer arm mount is required.
