Bobcat at a glance
The history of Bobcat began in 1957 in Minnesota: brothers Louis and Cyril Keller built a small, manoeuvrable three-wheeled loader for a turkey farmer to muck out the coops. The Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner (North Dakota) adopted the idea, launching the M60 and M200 loaders in 1958 and the four-wheeled M400 in 1960 – according to the company, the world’s first compact loader with skid-steer steering. In 1962, the M440 became the first model to be given the name Bobcat. The ownership changed hands several times thereafter: in 1969, Clark Equipment bought Melroe; Ingersoll Rand followed in 1995; and in 2007, the South Korean Doosan Group acquired Bobcat for 4.9 billion US dollars. Today, the company operates as Doosan Bobcat; in 2025, it generated a turnover of around US$6.2 billion, spread across compact machinery, industrial trucks and portable power.
The product range has expanded over the years: in 1986, Bobcat entered the compact excavator market; in 1999, the 864 – the first compact loader on tracks – was launched; and in 2000, with the acquisition of Sambron, the range was extended to include telescopic handlers. For the European market, Bobcat manufactures loaders, mini-excavators and attachments in Dobříš (Czech Republic) – where its European headquarters has also been based since 2017 – whilst the telescopic handlers are produced in Pontchâteau, France. In 2021, Doosan Bobcat acquired the forklift division Doosan Industrial Vehicle, and in March 2023, the company announced that it would in future sell forklift trucks, warehouse equipment and the compressors and generators from Doosan Portable Power under the Bobcat brand.

What the Bobcat model designation reveals
For compact loaders, the first letter indicates the undercarriage: S stands for the wheeled skid-steer loader, T for the compact crawler loader, and MT for the small mini-crawler loader. The number roughly indicates the size class – an S70 is one of the smallest wheel loaders in the range, whilst an S650 or T770 is among the larger machines. The newer two-digit models such as the S66, T76 or T86 make up the current generation, whilst the suffix ‘-2’ denotes a revised version. Mini-excavators are designated with an ‘E’; the number roughly corresponds to the operating weight in 100 kg (E27z ≈ 2.7 t). A small ‘z’ denotes zero-tail excavators, whose upper structure remains within the track width when turning; an ‘e’ denotes the electric models E10e and E19e. Wheel loaders are designated ‘L’. For telescopic handlers, the first number indicates the lifting capacity, whilst the second roughly indicates the lift height: A TL30.70 lifts 3.0 t to a height of around 6.7 m. ‘TL’ stands for the compact series, ‘T’ with a three-digit height specification (e.g. T35.105L) for the large series, and ‘TR’ for rotating telescopic handlers. For forklift trucks, the first letter usually denotes the power source – D for diesel, B for battery, G for LPG – whilst for Portable Power, PA stands for compressors and PG for generators.
| Model | Data | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| E10z / E10e | approx. 1 t, zero-tail or electric | Indoors, gardens, through doors and gates |
| E17z / E19 / E19e | 1–2 t | House connections, trenches, transport on a car trailer |
| E26 / E27z | 2–3 t (E27z approx. 2.7 t, zero-tail) | Most popular Bobcat excavator: sewer and pipeline construction |
| E35 / E35z | 3–4 t | All-rounder for civil engineering |
| E50 / E55 | 4–6 t | Excavation pits, sewer construction on public roads |
| S70 | one of the smallest skid-steer loaders | Halls, stables, narrow access routes |
| S450 / S530 / S650 | Skid-steer loaders, medium to large class | Earthworks, farmyards, gardening and landscaping with attachments |
| T590 / T770 | Compact loaders on tracks | Soft ground, grading work, forestry |
| TL30.60 / TL38.70HF | 3.0–3.8 t, approx. 6–7 m | Agriculture, building materials trade, construction sites |

What we look out for in a used Bobcat
Skid-steer loaders – drive system and loader arm: Skid-steer loaders steer by means of wheels or tracks moving at different speeds; this puts strain on the tyres, tracks and drive system. Check tyre wear, the condition of the tracks on the T-model, and any play in the bolts on the loader arm and on the attachment plate for the attachments.
Mini-excavators – undercarriage and pins: Rubber tracks, track rollers and track links are the most expensive wear parts. Check for play in the bucket, arm and boom pins and on the swing block; on zero-tail swing models, inspect the hoses in the confined spaces for signs of chafing.
Engine, hydraulics and emission standard: Check cold start, smoke emissions and smooth hydraulic movements under load. Newer machines comply with Stage V; older ones are cheaper but are not permitted on every construction site. For the E10e and E19e electric models, the condition of the battery and the charger are important.
Equipment and documentation: Auxiliary hydraulics, high-flow systems, quick-change couplers and attachments significantly increase the value. Ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity, service log and UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Bobcat
What do the letters S and T mean for Bobcat skid-steer loaders?
‘S’ stands for the wheeled skid-steer loader, whilst ‘T’ stands for the tracked compact loader. Tracked loaders exert less ground pressure and offer greater traction on soft ground, whilst wheeled loaders are faster on paved surfaces and cheaper to maintain.
What does the ‘z’ mean on Bobcat mini-excavators?
The ‘z’ denotes zero-tail swing excavators: the upper structure remains within the track width when turning; on the E27z, this is also the case with additional weight. This is ideal for working alongside house walls and on roads. Models with an ‘e’, such as the E10e and E19e, are electric.
Which Bobcat machines are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the most common mini-excavators are the E26 and E35, followed by the E50, E10 and E19. Among compact loaders, the S450 and S70, as well as the T590 track loader, lead the way; for telescopic handlers, it’s the TL38.70HF and TL30.60.
Is Bobcat part of Doosan?
Yes. Bobcat has been part of the South Korean Doosan Group since 2007 and operates under the name Doosan Bobcat. The large Doosan excavators and wheel loaders, on the other hand, have been known as Develon since 2023 and belong to the HD Hyundai Group – which is a different company.
Does Bobcat also manufacture forklift trucks and compressors?
Yes. Since 2023, Doosan Bobcat has been selling the former Doosan forklift trucks and the compressors and generators from Doosan Portable Power under the Bobcat brand. Second-hand machines from earlier model years are usually still marketed under the Doosan name.
How do I interpret the model designations for Bobcat telescopic handlers?
The first number is the lifting capacity in tonnes, the second roughly the lift height in metres. So a TL30.70 lifts 3.0 t to around 6.7 m, whilst a T35.105L lifts 3.5 t to just over 10 m.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Bobcat?
Provided there is evidence of regular maintenance, 3,000 to 5,000 hours is no problem for a mini-excavator or skid-steer loader. The key factors are the undercarriage, bolt play, drive system and hydraulics – these are often more important than the sheer number of hours.
Can I lease a Bobcat machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation enquiry for leasing or hire purchase directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
