What we look for in used tractors
Operating hours and usage: A standard tractor runs for 500–1,000 hours a year; in contract farming, significantly more. More important is the usage profile: transport hours place a different strain on the gearbox and axles than PTO work.
Gearbox and drivetrain: Continuously variable transmissions (Fendt Vario, CLAAS CMATIC, Case CVX, Deutz TTV, Steyr CVT) must engage smoothly and quietly under load; for powershift transmissions, check all gears and the reverse shuttle. Test the PTO at all speeds, as well as the four-wheel drive system and differential locks under load.
Hydraulics and power lifts: Leaking control units, ‘sweating’ cylinders and a rear power lift that drops under load are warning signs. The flow rate of the load-sensing pump, the number of control units, Power Beyond and the front power lift with front PTO should be included in the advert.
Axles, steering and tyres: Check for play in the front axle and steering knuckles, and check the operation of the front axle and cab suspension. The remaining tread depth of the tyres can quickly account for a price difference of €5,000–10,000 on large tractors; on Terra Trac and Quadtrac models, check the track belts and rollers.
Electronics, GPS and exhaust after-treatment: the terminal, ISOBUS functionality and steering system – including activation of features such as RTK and Section Control – must be transferable. From Euro 4 onwards, the AdBlue system and particulate filter are also included: have the fault memory read out and check the regeneration cycles.
Documents and maintenance: Registration certificate Parts I and II, maintenance records, and check whether the clutch, brakes or gearbox have been overhauled.

Brands and dealers
CLAAS accounts for the majority of our tractor range – from the Arion to the Xerion, plus older Ares, Axos and Elios models. John Deere is represented by the 6R and 7R series, Fendt with Vario models from the 200, 300 and 800 series, as well as Valtra, Massey Ferguson, Case, New Holland, Deutz-Fahr and the JCB Fastrac HMV 155. Most of the tractors come from Mecklenburger Landtechnik GmbH, a CLAAS sales partner in northern Germany; the Arbos 5115 and 5130 are supplied by Bontebok Trading B.V. from the Netherlands.
Frequently asked questions about used tractors
How much does a used tractor cost?
Compact tractors are available from around €5,700, whilst a mid-range CLAAS Arion starts at around €33,000. Large standard tractors such as the Axion 800 or John Deere 6R range from around €60,000 to €175,000 depending on the year of manufacture, whilst Xerion system tractors cost up to around €224,000.
How many operating hours are normal for a second-hand tractor?
For standard tractors, 500–1,000 hours per year is typical, so a five-year-old tractor with 4,000–5,000 hours is considered normal. With proper maintenance, the engines of modern large tractors can reach 10,000 hours or more; the condition of the gearbox and maintenance records are crucial.
Continuously variable transmission (CVT) or powershift transmission?
Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) such as the Fendt Vario or CLAAS CMATIC really come into their own when using the PTO, operating a front loader and at varying speeds. Power-shift transmissions are usually cheaper to repair and offer equivalent performance for pure towing work. For both types, ensure that records of gearbox oil changes in accordance with the recommended intervals are available.
Is the GPS steering system included in the sale?
That depends on the advert. Many Axion and John Deere models are fitted with an RTK steering system; it is important to check whether the receiver, terminal and authorisations are included and will be transferred to the new owner. You can also find individual components under ‘GPS and steering systems’.
When is a crawler or articulated tractor worth it?
The Axion Terra Trac, Xerion and Quadtrac distribute the weight over a larger contact area and deliver high tractive effort to the field whilst minimising soil compaction. This is worthwhile from around 300 PS, on heavy soils and for farms that apply large quantities of slurry using a mounted tank or operate wide cultivators.
