Deutz at a glance
Deutz AG is regarded as the world’s oldest engine manufacturer. Nicolaus August Otto and Eugen Langen founded the company N. A. Otto & Cie. in Cologne on 31 March 1864; in 1872, it moved to Deutz and became Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz AG. In 1876, the first four-stroke engine – the Otto engine – was developed there. In 1938, the company became part of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD), which became renowned after the Second World War for its air-cooled diesel engines. In 1975, KHD transferred its Magirus-Deutz lorry division to the newly founded Iveco. Following the complete takeover of Maschinenfabrik Fahr, KHD entered the agricultural machinery market as Deutz-Fahr from 1977; in 1995, this division was sold to the Italian SAME Group. Since 1997, the company has once again been known as Deutz AG and has since focused on engines.
Its headquarters and largest production site are in Cologne-Porz; it has further plants in China, the USA, Spain and Morocco. In 2025, Deutz generated a turnover of around 2.04 billion euros and employed around 5,700 full-time staff. The engines deliver up to 620 kW and power construction machinery, tractors, forklift trucks, aerial work platforms, generator sets and rail vehicles. In addition to diesel, the company offers gas, petrol, hydrogen and electric powertrains; in 2023, Deutz and Daimler Truck announced a partnership on engines and hydrogen internal combustion engines. In 2024, Deutz took over the sales and service business for smaller off-highway engines from Rolls-Royce Power Systems, followed by acquisitions in the power generation sector, such as Blue Star Power Systems.

What the Deutz engine designation reveals
Classic Deutz engines feature a combination of letters and numbers: B stands for turbocharging, F for a four-stroke vehicle engine, the number indicates the number of cylinders, L for air-cooled and M for liquid-cooled. This is followed by the series; the last two digits indicate the approximate piston stroke in centimetres. A BF6M1013 is therefore a turbocharged, liquid-cooled six-cylinder engine from the 1013 series, whilst an F2L1011 is an air-cooled two-cylinder engine from the 1011 series. Letters at the end, such as C, E or EC, denote different variants. Today’s engines are named differently: the number indicates the displacement in litres; L4 or L6 denote in-line engines with four or six cylinders; V6 and V8 denote V-engines. TCD denotes turbocharged diesel engines with intercooling, TD and D denote the simpler variants, whilst G denotes gas and petrol engines. A TCD 4.1 L4 is therefore a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4.1 litres.
| Engine | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| F2L1011 / F3L1011 | 2 or 3 cylinders, L designation, naturally aspirated engine | Rollers, compact machinery, power units |
| F4L2011 / BF4M1012 | 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated or turbocharged engine | Mini-excavators, forklift trucks, skid-steer loaders, aerial work platforms |
| F4L912 / F6L912 | 4 or 6-cylinder, air-cooled | Older construction machinery, tractors, pumps and power units |
| F6L913 / BF6L913 | 6-cylinder, air-cooled, available as BF with turbo | Older wheel loaders, excavators, compressors |
| BF4M1013 / BF6M1013 | 4 or 6 cylinders, turbocharged, liquid-cooled | Wheel loaders, excavators, tractors, generator sets |
| TCD 2012 / TCD 2013 | 4 or 6 cylinders, turbocharged with intercooling | Tractors, telescopic handlers, excavators |
| TCD 3.6 / TCD 4.1 L4 | 4-cylinder, 3.6 or 4.1 litres | Current compact and mid-range construction machinery |
| TCD 6.1 / TCD 7.8 L6 | 6-cylinder, 6.1 or 7.8 litres | Wheel loaders, tractors, larger excavators |
What we look for in a used Deutz engine
Type and engine number: The type plate specifies the model, series and engine number. This allows the variant, performance and spare parts to be clearly identified – particularly for variants such as BF6M1013 E, EC or FC, which differ in terms of fitted components and performance.
Cooling: For air-cooled engines, check the cooling fins, fan and V-belts – dirty fins lead to overheating. For liquid-cooled engines, inspect the radiator, water pump and coolant for traces of oil or exhaust fumes.
Running condition: Cold start, smoke pattern, oil pressure and blow-by reveal a great deal about wear and tear. Ideally, you should have a test run video or a test bench report; for replacement engines, ask whether the engine has been overhauled.
Emissions standard and installation: For installation in an existing machine, the emissions standard, mounting components (starter motor, alternator, hydraulic pump drive), flywheel and wiring harness are important. Newer TCD engines often require a suitable control unit and exhaust after-treatment.

Frequently asked questions about Deutz
Are Deutz and Deutz-Fahr the same company?
No. Deutz AG in Cologne manufactures engines. The agricultural machinery division, operating under the Deutz-Fahr brand, was sold in 1995 to the Italian SAME Group, now known as SDF; the tractors are manufactured in Lauingen. However, Deutz engines are frequently fitted in Deutz-Fahr tractors.
What does BF6M1013 mean at Deutz?
B stands for turbocharging, F for a four-stroke vehicle engine, 6 for six cylinders, M for liquid cooling, and 1013 for the series. An ‘L’ instead of an ‘M’, as in the F4L912, denotes air-cooled engines.
What does TCD 4.1 L4 mean?
TCD stands for a turbocharged diesel engine with intercooling, 4.1 for a 4.1-litre displacement, and L4 for four cylinders in line. All current Deutz engines are named according to this scheme, from the TCD 2.2 to the TCD 18.0.
Which Deutz engines are the most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
Primarily the widely used 1013 series (BF4M and BF6M), the air-cooled 912 and 913, as well as the 1011 and 2011, as well as newer TCD engines such as the TCD 2012 and TCD 6.1. Spare parts are readily available for these models.
Does Deutz still manufacture air-cooled engines?
Air-cooled engines were Deutz’s hallmark for decades, as they cannot freeze or overheat. Individual variants such as the D 914 are still listed in the product catalogue, but the focus today is on liquid-cooled TCD engines.
Will a second-hand Deutz engine fit my machine?
The key factors are the series, model and fitment parts. Compare the engine number and type plate of the old engine with the advertisement, and ask the dealer about the flywheel, connections and control unit. The machine manufacturer can assist with emissions regulations for reinstallation.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a used Deutz engine?
That depends on the series and how it has been used. A well-maintained engine with good oil pressure, clean exhaust smoke and no blow-by is worth more than one with a low hour reading but no proof of maintenance. Reconditioned engines with a service report are the safer choice.
Can I lease a Deutz engine or finance it via a hire-purchase scheme?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can clarify the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
