Which asphalt box is right for your job?
Amtec ATB 3 – 3 t for repair crews: Fits on a 3.5-t trailer, flatbed or tipper; diesel or propane heating, insulated container, rear discharge flap. For potholes, house connections, pipe trenches and small areas. Also available second-hand and as demonstration units in stock.
Amtec 3.6 t and 5 t TC: Larger capacity for local authorities and utility companies with a daily schedule; mounted on a 7.5-t lorry or trailer, with hydraulic tipping.
Amtec TWINBOX 4D 8/10 and 12/14 – 10 and 14 t: Two separate chambers for two types of mix (e.g. binder and surface course), mounted on 3-axle lorries or semi-trailers, diesel heating with thermostat. For road construction companies and asphalt repair services with area-based programmes.
What we look for in second-hand asphalt boxes
Heating: diesel or gas burner (ignition, flame pattern, thermostat), heating ducts and insulation – does the box maintain the temperature for the specified duration? A test run with temperature measurement is advisable.
Tank and hatches: Wear and caking inside the tank, warping of hatches and seals, discharge and tipping mechanisms (hydraulic: cylinder leaks, pump, control system).
Bodywork and chassis: For trailer-mounted units, check axles, brakes, tyres and roadworthiness test; for bodywork, check the mounting and condition of the sub-frame; lighting and registration.
Documents: CE marking, operating instructions; for gas heating, inspection of the LPG system (DGUV Regulation 79), test certificate for the hydraulics.

Frequently asked questions about asphalt boxes
How long does an asphalt box keep the mix warm?
With the heating running, up to 12 hours at paving temperature (140–160 °C); without heating, several hours thanks to the insulation. The key factors are the insulation, the thermostat and a closed lid.
How much does an asphalt box cost?
A new 3-tonne box costs in the high four-figure to low five-figure range; second-hand ones are cheaper; 5-tonne boxes are in the mid-five-figure range, whilst the TWINBOX 10–14 tonnes is significantly more expensive. The main factors driving the price are the capacity, heating system, hydraulics and number of chambers.
Which box for which quantity?
Allow for 2.4 tonnes of hot asphalt per m³ and a 4 cm wearing course ≈ 100 kg/m². A 3-t box covers around 30 m² of surface course or 40–50 potholes per day; for daily workloads of 100 m² or more, the 5-t box is worthwhile, whilst the TWINBOX is recommended for 300 m² or more.
Diesel or gas heating?
Diesel is standard for body-mounted units and large boxes (tank on the vehicle, long running time). Propane is lighter and cheaper to purchase, but requires cylinder changes and inspection of the gas system – making it a sensible choice for small trailer-mounted boxes.
