What we look for in used lorries
Mileage and history: Mileage in relation to usage, service history book from the manufacturer’s service centre, number of previous owners. A distribution lorry with frequent stops puts greater strain on the clutch and brakes than a long-haul vehicle.
Engine and emissions standard: Euro 6 is a prerequisite for low-emission zones and favourable toll categories. Check the AdBlue system, particulate filter and fault memory; observe cold starts and smoke emissions.
Bodywork: For box bodies, check the floor, seals, doors and lashing rails; for tarpaulin bodies, check the cover, stanchions and sliding mechanism; for refrigerated bodies, check the compressor operating hours, refrigerant and insulation; for tail-lifts, check the load capacity, hydraulics and the annual UVV inspection.
Inspections and documentation: Lorries over 7.5 t require an annual general inspection and a safety inspection in between. The tachograph must be inspected every two years; tankers have additional inspection intervals for the tank.
Right-hand drive and export: Right-hand drive vehicles such as the MAN TGM 18.320 are designed for markets with left-hand traffic. For use in continental Europe, a left-hand drive vehicle is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions about used lorries
How much does a used lorry over 7.5 tonnes cost?
Older chassis are available from around €10,000, whilst newer 7.5-tonne box lorries range from around €19,500 to €28,000. Second-hand tanker and silo vehicles cost around €30,000 to €45,000, whilst a new MAN TGM chassis costs around €60,000.
Box body or tarpaulin?
A box body provides better protection for the load and is essential for refrigerated transport and furniture transport. Curtainsiders and sliding-side curtainsiders can be loaded from the side and from above; they are lighter and offer greater flexibility for pallets and long loads.
Which driving licence is required for lorries over 7.5 t?
For vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 7.5 t, a Class C licence is required; for those towing a heavy trailer, a Class CE licence is required. Anyone transporting goods commercially also needs a professional driver’s qualification, which involves regular further training.
What is a BDF chassis?
A chassis designed for standardised swap bodies. The swap body rests on support legs; the lorry drives underneath, lowers its air suspension and secures it in place. Commonly used by parcel and general cargo services.
What is a normal mileage for a used lorry?
Distribution lorries often cover 40,000 to 80,000 km a year, whilst long-haul lorries cover significantly more. More important than the mileage are a comprehensive maintenance history, the condition of the drivetrain and a clean fault memory.
Can I lease or finance a lorry?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. The purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the dealer.
