CVS Ferrari at a glance

CVS Ferrari is based in Roveleto di Cadeo near Piacenza in Emilia-Romagna. The company states 1974 as its year of foundation, whilst the announcement regarding the change of ownership in 2024 refers to 1973. Production takes place at two Italian plants, in Roveleto di Cadeo and in Sorbolo (province of Parma). At the start of 2024, around 120 people were employed by CVS Ferrari, with an annual production capacity of approximately 200 units; according to the company, turnover has roughly tripled since 2020.

The company has changed hands several times. A takeover by Kalmar fell through in 2006 due to opposition from the German Federal Cartel Office. In 2010, CVS Ferrari entered into an Italian insolvency procedure (Concordato preventivo), and the US crane manufacturer Manitex continued operations via one of its own subsidiaries. At the end of 2016, the investment company NEIP III and BP Battioni & Pagani took over the company. Since then, BP’s sideloaders (BP Sideloaders) and BP’s hybrid technology have also been part of the product range. In February 2024, the American Taylor Group, one of the largest privately-owned manufacturers of heavy-duty forklifts in North America, acquired 85 per cent of the shares; BP retained 10 per cent, whilst 5 per cent are held by the sales director.

What the CVS Ferrari model designation reveals

All current reach stackers are designated F500. The number following ‘RS’ roughly indicates the performance class. In the first series, all models have a lifting capacity of 45 to 46 t; as the number increases, the lifting capacity in the second and third series rises: the RS2-E has a capacity of 31 t, the RS6-E 39 t and the RS8-E 44 t. The suffixes denote different variants. According to the manufacturer, the -V models stack five 9'6" containers on top of one another, whilst the -E models stack ‘1 over 5’, i.e. six layers of 8'6". PB stands for Piggyback: These machines also have gripping arms for swap bodies and semi-trailers in combined transport; however, this reduces the lifting capacity in the rear rows. In the older F478, F479 and F481 series, all models lift 45 t in the first row, whilst the higher-numbered models lift more in the second row. With forklift trucks, it’s simpler: FH plus load capacity in tonnes; an FH42 therefore lifts 42 t. Suffixes such as .5 or S denote variants. The load chart for the individual machine is always authoritative.

What we look for in a used CVS Ferrari

Spreader and boom: check the twist locks, the spreader’s telescopic and rotational functions, side shift and 20/40-foot length adjustment. On the telescopic boom, check for wear on the sliding blocks, play and cracks at the articulation points; check the lift and telescopic cylinders for leaks.

Powertrain: Depending on the year of manufacture, the vehicle is fitted with Cummins, Scania or Volvo engines coupled with Dana/Clark powershift transmissions. Check cold start performance, exhaust smoke and gear-shifting behaviour under load; inspect the wet multi-disc brakes and drive axle. The tyres, in sizes 18.00-25 or 18.00-33, represent a significant cost factor.

Operating hours and usage profile: Port machinery often operates in multi-shift operation; five-figure hour readings are normal. More important than the figure itself is a complete maintenance log. Clarify whether the machine was used in a seaport with salty air or at an inland terminal.

Load diagram and documentation: The type plate and load diagram must correspond to the machine and the fitted spreader; this applies in particular to PB variants. For use in Germany, ensure you are provided with the annual inspection report in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68 and the CE documentation.

Frequently asked questions about CVS Ferrari

Is CVS Ferrari connected to the sports car manufacturer Ferrari?

No. CVS Ferrari is an independent Italian manufacturer of reach stackers and heavy-duty forklifts, based in Roveleto di Cadeo near Piacenza, with a second plant in Sorbolo near Parma.

Who owns CVS Ferrari today?

Since February 2024, the American Taylor Group has held 85 per cent of the shares. The remaining 15 per cent is divided between BP Battioni & Pagani (10 per cent) and a company owned by the sales director (5 per cent). Previously, from 2016 to 2024, CVS Ferrari was owned by NEIP III and BP.

What do RS3, RS5 or RS8 mean in the F500?

The RS number roughly indicates the load capacity class. In the first row, all F500s lift around 45 to 46 tonnes; as the number increases, the lifting capacity in the second and third rows rises – for the RS8, for example, to 44 tonnes in the second row. The load diagram for the individual machine is binding.

What does PB mean on a CVS Ferrari reachstacker?

PB stands for Piggyback. In addition to the container spreader, these machines have gripping arms for swap bodies and semi-trailers and are used in combined rail/road transport. Due to the heavier equipment, the load capacity in the rear rows is slightly reduced.

Which second-hand CVS Ferrari reach stackers are most commonly traded?

On the second-hand market, the F500 RS3 and the older F478, F479 and F481 are among the most common models, along with the F500 RS5, RS6 and RS8, and PB variants such as the F377.5 PB and F378.5 PB. The market is smaller than that for forklift trucks, so stock changes quickly.

Does CVS Ferrari also manufacture forklift trucks?

Yes. As well as reach stackers, there are heavy-duty forklifts ranging from the FH25 to the FH50 with lifting capacities of 25 to 50 tonnes, container handlers for full and empty containers, the fully electric ZE-Lift, the hybrid HY-Lift and, since 2016, the BP side-loaders.

Are new CVS Ferrari terminal tractors still available?

Terminal tractors are not listed in the current manufacturer’s range. The TT2516, a tractor unit for manoeuvring semi-trailers on port and factory premises, is particularly common on the second-hand market.

Can I lease a CVS Ferrari reachstacker or finance one via hire purchase?

For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
