Which diesel forklift is right for your application?
1.6 to 2 t – compact: Linde H16D/H18D (391 EVO), Hyster H2.0FT, Still RX 70-20. For tradespeople, smaller farms, building materials suppliers and agriculture – manoeuvrable, economical, fits on a standard trailer.
2.5 to 3.5 t – the standard class: Linde H25D/H30D/H35D (392 EVO, 1202), Still RX 70-30, Doosan D30S, Toyota 8FD. The all-rounder for building yards, haulage yards, and the timber and drinks trade. Most of our listings fall into this class.

What we look out for in used diesel forklifts
Engine and exhaust emissions: cold start, smoke emissions under load, oil leaks from the engine and transmission. Since 2019, new engines have been subject to EU Stage V emissions standards with a particulate filter; older machines compliant with Stage IIIA/IIIB are often cheaper, but may not be permitted in every warehouse or for every tender. For forklifts with particulate filters, we enquire about regeneration intervals and the fault memory.
Operating hours in relation to year of manufacture: Diesel forklifts in continuous use can easily clock up 2,000 hours a year. More important than the figure itself are maintenance records and the condition of the clutch or torque converter, brakes and steering axle.
Mast, tracks, forks, hydraulics: track elongation, play in the mast, worn forks (replace if wear exceeds 10 per cent), and leaking cylinders. The forklift must be able to hold the rated load at full height without sagging.
Cab and tyres: For year-round outdoor use, a full cab, heating and air conditioning are worthwhile. Super-elastic tyres for yards and warehouses, pneumatic tyres for gravel and off-road use – check the tread and for cracks; this is a key factor in pricing.
Documentation: Annual inspection in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68, CE marking with a declaration of conformity. When travelling on public roads, the forklift truck also requires lighting and, depending on its speed, a roadworthiness certificate.

How much does a second-hand diesel forklift cost?
The key factors are load capacity, year of manufacture, operating hours, emissions standard and features such as a cab or side shift. A forklift in the 2.5-tonne class with a few thousand operating hours usually costs significantly less than half the new price when bought second-hand. For ‘negotiable’ listings, enquire directly with the dealer – if you specify your intended use, you’ll receive a suitable quote.
How many operating hours are still acceptable for a diesel forklift?
Well-maintained industrial engines can run for 15,000 hours or more. More important than the figure itself are the maintenance history, exhaust smoke, oil pressure and the condition of the transmission, brakes and mast. Ask for a demonstration of the forklift whilst it’s warm and have it lifted to full height under load.
Is a diesel forklift allowed to be used indoors?
Only if there is adequate ventilation and a functioning particulate filter or catalytic converter; the employers’ liability insurance association sets limit values for diesel engine emissions. For regular indoor use, an electric or LPG forklift is the safest option.
Which emission standard do I need?
For operation exclusively on your own premises, there is no obligation to retrofit. However, public sector clients, ports and large industrial customers are increasingly requiring Stage IIIB or V. Clarify this before purchasing if you work for such customers.
Diesel or LPG?
Diesel for purely outdoor use, heavy continuous loads and steep gradients. LPG if the forklift moves between the warehouse and the yard – lower emissions, quicker cylinder changes, but requiring LPG system inspection and ventilation.
What does ‘container-compatible’ mean?
The forklift has a lowered mast height (usually under 2.2 m) and sufficient free lift height to allow it to drive into a shipping container and stack pallets there. An important feature for haulage contractors and exporters.
